Vršič is the highest road pass in Slovenia, climbing from Kranjska Gora over the Julian Alps to the Soča valley. The route is known as the Russian Road (Ruska cesta) after the Russian prisoners of war who built it for the Austro-Hungarian army in 1915-1917. The full road carries 50 numbered hairpins, 24 on the Kranjska Gora side, several of them still cobbled at the turns. The canonical north-side climb runs about 11.8 km at a 6.9% average, with a steepest sustained section around 12-13%.
