The Umbrailpass is Switzerland's highest paved road and, sitting in the shadow of the neighbouring Stelvio, it stays remarkably quiet. From Santa Maria in the Val Müstair the road climbs roughly 13 km through some 35 hairpins to the Italy-Switzerland border at the col, where it joins the Stelvio road. The Swiss side was the last alpine pass road to be fully asphalted, completed only in 2015; before that the upper section was gravel.
