Passo Tonale carries the SS42 over the Rhaetian Alps between Lombardy's Val Camonica and Trentino's Val di Sole, splitting the Adamello and Ortles-Cevedale ranges. From Ponte di Legno the west side is the classic approach, a steady climb on never-brutal gradients that the Giro d'Italia has used repeatedly, including the 2010 finish at Ponte di Legno-Tonale won by Ivan Basso. The pass marked the Italy/Austria-Hungary border until 1918 and saw heavy fighting in the WWI 'Guerra Bianca'; a 1924 military memorial near the summit honours over 800 dead from those mountain battles.
