From Dimaro in the Val di Sole, the SS239 climbs through the Val Meledrio to Campo Carlo Magno, the saddle between the Adamello-Presanella massif and the Brenta Dolomites that links the Val di Sole with the Val Rendena. The first roughly 7 km to the ski resort of Folgarida are the hardest, with hairpins and gradients around 8-10 percent; the second half eases to 4-6 percent past Madonna di Campiglio up to the pass. The name links the site to a legend that Charlemagne crossed here in 800 AD on his way to his imperial coronation in Rome, though historians regard the story as myth and trace the name to later regional tradition and a 1909 official toponym.
