The Splügenpass climbs the Swiss side from the village of Splügen (about 1457 m) to a col at roughly 2115 m, gaining around 655 m over 8.8 km at a steady 7.4 percent. The current road was cut between 1818 and 1823, its even gradient held by long series of hairpin bends and stone galleries built to fend off avalanches. It was a major trade route from Roman times until the San Bernardino tunnel opened in 1967 drew the traffic away; today it is a quieter pass, closed through winter and snow-free only from roughly May to November. The North ramp is shorter and more constant than the long South side from Chiavenna in Italy.
