The San Bernardino Pass (2067 m) links the Hinterrhein valley in Graubünden with the Mesolcina (Misox) valley running down toward Bellinzona, crossing the watershed between the Rhine and Po basins and the Italian-German language line. A wheeled road first opened in 1770 and was rebuilt in 1821-1823; since the San Bernardino road tunnel opened in 1967, through traffic mostly bypasses the old pass, leaving the climb quiet. The canonical cycling ascent is the southern one: from Lostallo the road climbs the Mesolcina, up through Mesocco and onto tight hairpins to a high plateau with the Laghetto Moesola at the col. The road is open only roughly May to November.
