Maloja is the odd one out among alpine passes: it only climbs from one side. From the Italian town of Chiavenna the road grinds up the Val Bregaglia for around 30 km, mostly gentle and uneven with long stretches to recover, before the real climb arrives — a tight knot of hairpins in the last 3 km up the rock face to Maloja village. Reach the top and there is no descent on the far side: the col sits at the lip of the high Engadin plateau, so the road runs flat past the lakes toward Sils and St. Moritz. The Giro d'Italia descended the pass on stage 7 of its 2009 edition.
