The Julierpass links the Engadin valley with central Graubünden over the Albula Alps and saw heavy traffic in Roman times, leaving more Roman road remains than anywhere else in Graubünden; two soapstone columns at the summit mark a former Roman sanctuary. The canton built the modern commercial road between 1820 and 1828, choosing the Julier over the rival Septimer pass for its gentler grades and lower avalanche danger. Between 1935 and 1940 it became the first Swiss alpine road paved with asphalt, and it is kept open year-round, weather permitting. From Silvaplana the climb is about 7 km at 6.4% on a wide, well-graded road.
