From Bergün the Albula road climbs steadily south past Preda to the pass at 2312 m, shadowing the UNESCO-listed Albula Railway whose loops, spiral tunnels and viaducts share the same valley. The pass links central Graubünden with the Engadin and is closed in winter, typically open from May to December. Lai da Palpuogna, a turquoise mountain lake below the summit, is a popular stop on the way up.
