The canonical climb to the Col de Sarenne starts in the Romanche valley at the junction of the RD1091 and RD25 near the Chambon dam, just east of Le Freney-d'Oisans, and climbs the D25/D25a through the village of Mizoën to the 1999 m pass. The reference profile is 12.8 km gaining 954 m at an average of 7.5%, with a steep opening kilometre toward Mizoën around 11.5% and a maximum near 13.5% about 3 km below the summit. The col sits in the Grandes Rousses massif roughly 9 km east of Alpe d'Huez, and its narrow, exposed descent toward Alpe d'Huez featured in Stage 18 of the 2013 Tour de France, where it drew safety criticism from riders. In summer the road is closed to motor traffic on Tuesdays as part of the Oisans Col Series.
