Alpe d'Huez is a ski resort in southeastern France whose access road is a well-known cycling climb finishing at 1,860 m. The climb on the D211 road covers 13.8 km at an average gradient of 8.1% and features 21 numbered hairpin bends; it first appeared in the 1952 Tour de France as the race's first mountain-top finish, won by Fausto Coppi. It returned to the Tour in 1976 and has been a regular stage finish since, with the hairpin bends named after stage winners.
