The road up the Valle Stura side-valley from Pratolungo to the Santuario di Sant'Anna di Vinadio — at ~2,035 m the highest sanctuary in Europe — hosted the decisive stage 20 of the 2016 Giro d'Italia, where Vincenzo Nibali overturned Esteban Chaves to win the race overall. It is a genuine Hors Catégorie: about 15 km at 7.6%, the final kilometres ramping toward 20% near the base of the Colle della Lombarda.
