Colle Fauniera, also called Colle dei Morti after 18th-century fighting between Franco-Spanish and Piedmontese troops, links the Vallone dell'Arma above Demonte with the Valle Grana. The Demonte side is the long approach: it begins irregularly with steep ramps broken by flat and descending stretches, passes through several avalanche tunnels, then steepens into 8-10 percent ramps in the upper third. A statue of Marco Pantani stands at the summit, commemorating his ride over the pass in the 1999 Giro d'Italia.
