Passo San Marco crosses the Orobie Alps in Lombardy, linking Morbegno in the Valtellina with Olmo al Brembo in the Val Brembana. The road follows the historic Via Priula, built by the Republic of Venice in 1592–93 to connect Bergamo with the Valtellina across territory it controlled, bypassing the Spanish-held Duchy of Milan. Both approaches are long Hors Catégorie climbs — roughly 26 km from Morbegno and 22 km from Olmo al Brembo — on a quiet, panoramic road well away from the busier Alpine passes.
