From Poschiavo the Bernina is the pass's serious face: about 17.5 km climbing roughly 1300 m at an average near 7.5%, with the gradient settling into a steady 7-9% once the road leaves San Carlo. It connects the Italian-speaking Val Poschiavo with the Engadin near St. Moritz, following a trade route used since medieval times and shadowed for much of the way by the Bernina Express railway. The road runs through high alpine terrain past Lago Bianco and Lej Nair near the summit.
