The Flüelapass links Davos in the Landwassertal with Susch in the Lower Engadin, and at 2383 m it is one of the higher paved crossings in Graubünden. The road was built in 1866–67 as the shortest route between the Rhine valley and the Lower Engadin; from Davos it climbs steadily through forest before the gradient stiffens into open hairpins above the Tschuggen treeline. It is a seasonal crossing, generally closed from January into spring because of avalanche risk, after which the Vereina rail tunnel (opened 1999) carries the winter traffic.
