The Mendelpass (Passo della Mendola) links Kaltern in South Tyrol with the Val di Non in Trentino, and marks the provincial border at 1363 m. From the Kaltern side the road climbs roughly 14 km with about 958 m of gain at an average near 6.8%, the steepest pitches around 15% in the village itself before the gradient eases. The pass road dates from around 1880 and winds up the eastern slope through a long series of hairpin bends.
