Monte Bondone rises directly west of Trento and is often called the mountain of the city. The classic cycling ascent climbs from the Adige valley floor at Trento up to the Vason / Le Viote area at roughly 1650 m, the same finish used by the Trento-Bondone hillclimb run since 1925. It is best known in cycling for the 1956 Giro d'Italia, when Charly Gaul won the snow-bound Merano-Monte Bondone stage in which 60 of 89 starters abandoned, a ride that handed him the overall lead. The ref max-gradient figure is the steepest 100 m segment (15.8%) reported by climbfinder rather than a single point reading.
