The Susten Pass road was built between 1938 and 1945 and links Innertkirchen in the canton of Bern with Wassen in the canton of Uri. The western ascent from Innertkirchen is the long, classic side: a steady climb of roughly 28 km up the Gadmertal, often ridden as part of the Innertkirchen trio with the neighbouring Grimsel and Furka passes. Near the top it opens onto the Stein Glacier, the view the pass is best known for.
