The Grimsel is the classic north-side approach from Innertkirchen in the Bernese Oberland, following the Aare valley for roughly 26 km at a steady 6% before the final dam-and-hairpin ramps up to the 2,164 m col. The road links Bern to the Valais and tops out beside the Grimselsee reservoir, with the bare granite landscape of the Aare power schemes around the summit. It has featured several times in the Tour de Suisse and is often combined with the neighbouring Furka and Susten passes into a hard three-pass loop.
