Colle San Carlo, also called Col d'Arpy, links Morgex in the Aosta Valley with La Thuile via the SR39. The canonical ascent from Morgex runs about 10.5 km at an average near 10 percent, climbing past a mineral water bottling plant before the road steepens and disappears into larch and pine woodland, where it stays relentless to the top. It is a steady power climb rather than a scenic one, with steep hairpins near the summit, and has featured in the Giro d'Italia several times.
