The Pragelpass links the Muotathal valley in Schwyz with the Klöntal in Glarus over a narrow, fully paved pass road. The Schwyz (Muotathal) side is the hard one: the first kilometres climb steeply through forest before easing toward the 1548 m col, earning an Hors Catégorie rating. The road was built in two phases for military reasons - the Glarus side in 1940, the Schwyz side completed in 1974 - and the eastern stretch between Richisau and the cantonal border is closed to motor traffic on Saturdays and Sundays, leaving it to cyclists and walkers. Its place in history is older still: in 1799 the Russian army under General Suvorov crossed the Pragel during its fighting retreat through the Alps. The pass is open only roughly mid-May to mid-October.
