Col de Porte sits at 1326 m in the Chartreuse massif, on the D512 between Grenoble and Chambéry, close beneath Chamechaude, the massif's highest peak. The classic ascent climbs from Grenoble through Corenc and the Col de Clémencière hairpins, where the early ramps are the hardest before the gradient eases past the Col de Vence. The Tour de France first crossed it in 1907 and has returned regularly; the climb also hosts a small ski station near the summit.
