The Colle del Nivolet is reached by paved road only from the Piemonte side, climbing from Ceresole Reale in the Orco valley to the pass at 2612 m on the edge of Gran Paradiso National Park. The SP50 road (formerly SS460) was built between 1953 and 1963 to serve the hydroelectric dams at Lago di Ceresole, Lago di Serrù and Lago Agnel, and it ends at the col as a dead end rather than crossing to the Valle d'Aosta side. The upper section is closed to motor traffic on summer Sundays, when the final kilometres become a car-free climb past high lakes and meadows.
