The Col du Mont Cenis (2083 m) has carried armies between France and Italy for millennia — some place Hannibal's elephants here, and Napoleon built his road over it between 1802 and 1805. The summit plateau holds a great artificial lake, dammed in 1921, which gives the top its strange, luminous calm. The Tour has crossed five times, hors catégorie since 1999, and the Giro came over in 2013.
