Perhaps the most famous climb the Giro d'Italia never raced. From Comeglians in the Carnia region of Friuli, Monte Crostis rears up 14 km at 10% — a narrow, savage Super-Hors-Catégorie wall of hairpins on the Strada Panoramica delle Vette. It was set to feature in the 2011 Giro, but after the death of Wouter Weylandt and the peloton's protests the jury struck it from the route on safety grounds — and the notoriety only grew. The climb itself is asphalt (rough near the top); beyond the summit the Panoramica runs on for kilometres of unpaved balcony road, but the ascent to ~1,980 m is paved throughout.
