The climb to the Rifugio Auronzo (2333 m) follows the SP49 toll road from Lake Misurina up to the foot of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Drei Zinnen) in the Sexten Dolomites. It runs about 7.5 km at an average of around 7.5%, with the final ramps after the toll gate near Lago d'Antorno rearing up to roughly 18% on hairpins through bare rock. Riders coming from Cortina d'Ampezzo first cross Passo Tre Croci (1809 m) before descending to Misurina and the foot of the toll road. The road has hosted several Giro d'Italia summit finishes, the first in 1967 and a Nibali stage win in 2013. The toll road is open only seasonally, typically from late May or early June to the end of October.
