The Mont du Chat above Lac du Bourget is one of France's genuinely brutal paved climbs — the race side from Le Bourget-du-Lac runs about 8.7 km at over 10%, with pitches into the mid-teens. It had a marquee 2017 double: the Critérium du Dauphiné climbed it in June, and the Tour de France crossed it on stage 9 before the fast descent to Chambéry where Richie Porte crashed out. Not the low Col du Chat — the real mountain road to the ridge.
