The most-ridden ascent climbs the Romanche valley from Le Bourg-d'Oisans on the D1091, the same valley road that passes the foot of Alpe d'Huez. At 34 km and an average of 3.8% it is long rather than steep: the road is steepest in the first kilometres above the river, with wide hairpins and two tunnels, then settles into a gradual drag upstream that includes a couple of short descents. The col connects the Romanche and Guisane valleys and carries traffic on toward the Col du Galibier and Briançon. The Tour de France first crossed the Lautaret in 1911 and has passed over it more than 40 times since 1947.
