The Col du Télégraphe (1566 m) is named for the optical semaphore station of Fort du Télégraphe at its crest, which once relayed messages across the Maurienne. From Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne it climbs 11.8 km at around 7 % through unbroken forest — never brutal, never easy. Its fame is as a gateway: in the Tour de France it is the opening act of the Galibier's north face.
