Passo Fedaia from Caprile is reckoned the hardest of the great Dolomite passes, harder than the neighbouring Pordoi and Giau. The first half from Caprile rises gently, but the last five kilometres from Malga Ciapela average around 11%, with a roughly three-kilometre dead-straight ramp touching 18% that riders have nicknamed the 'graveyard of champions'. The summit sits at the foot of the Marmolada, the highest peak in the Dolomites, beside the Lago di Fedaia dam, and the climb is a recurring feature of the Giro d'Italia, first used in 1970.
