From Sölden in the Ötztal the Timmelsjoch (2474 m) climbs about 22.6 km at 5.6% to the Austrian-Italian watershed, gaining roughly 1260 m. The gradient is uneven rather than relentless: it eases through Zwieselstein and Obergurgl before the open alpine ramp to the pass, where the final kilometres steepen and short pitches approach 14%. It is the Austrian side of the toll Timmelsjoch Hochalpenstraße, a high road that is closed in winter and open to cyclists only in the summer months.
