The Col de la Colombière first appeared in the Tour de France in 1960 and has been crossed 23 times, most recently in 2021. The southern approach from Le Grand-Bornand is the more scenic and less severe side: about 11.7 km at an average of 5.9%, climbing through the valley and the ski hamlet of Le Chinaillon before the steeper final kilometres to the pass at 1,613 m. The harder northern side rises from the Arve valley near Cluses and Scionzier.
