The canonical ascent of the Col de Chaussy climbs from Pontamafrey in the Maurienne valley and opens with the Lacets de Montvernier, a stack of 17 hairpins built in 1934 that switch back up a cliff face in under 2 km. Above Montvernier the road continues on the D77 through forest and alpine meadow to the 1533 m col. The Pontamafrey side measures about 14 km with 1031 m of gain at 7.36% average and ramps reaching 11%. The road and its hairpins were used by the Tour de France for the first time in 2015.
