The Simplon Pass (2006 m) links Brig in the Valais with Domodossola in Italy. Napoleon had the road built between 1801 and 1805 by engineer Nicolas Céard as a military corridor, and the climb from Brig still follows his Napoleon Road, modernised in the 1970s with avalanche galleries. Long, steady and grandly engineered, it is the quiet giant among the Swiss crossings.
